BMW’s R 1250 RT has long been a favorite among sport touring enthusiasts, thanks to its balance of power, comfort, and technology. The 2024 model continues that legacy with incremental improvements, but all eyes are on 2025, as BMW prepares to transition the R 1250 RT to the more powerful R 1300 RT. While official details on the 2025 model remain limited, industry insiders and early information give us a glimpse of what to expect from the upcoming iteration of this beloved touring machine.

Refining a Classic: The Iconic BMW R 1250 RT

The 2024 R 1250 RT carries forward BMW’s signature boxer engine, a 1254cc twin-cylinder powerhouse that delivers a smooth 136 horsepower. Riders continue to enjoy the bike’s ShiftCam technology, which optimizes valve timing for greater power and efficiency across the RPM range. The 2024 model also comes equipped with advanced rider aids, including the latest generation of BMW’s Dynamic Traction Control, ABS Pro, and the optional Dynamic ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment), which makes every mile a joy whether you’re on twisty backroads or long highway stretches.

In terms of tech, the 2024 R 1250 RT sports BMW’s impressive 10.25-inch TFT display, offering seamless integration with navigation, media, and bike settings—all of it accessible via the easy-to-use handlebar controls. The adaptive headlights ensure safe night riding, and a suite of comfort options like heated grips, seats, and customizable riding modes make the bike an ideal companion for extended tours.

What’s Next: More Power for Starters

BMW has confirmed that the R 1250 RT will transition to the 1300cc engine in 2025, bringing a boost in performance to the sport touring category. Early information suggests the new 1300 motor will deliver closer to 150 horsepower, offering a noticeable increase in power while maintaining the smooth, low-end torque that the RT series is known for. Though detailed specifications are still limited, BMW enthusiasts can expect enhanced aerodynamics, new suspension technology, and possibly even a lighter chassis.

According to reports from Australian Motorcycle News and TopSpeed, the 2025 model is also expected to feature upgraded connectivity, building on the already excellent TFT interface found on the R 1250 RT. Riders may also see improved integration with wearable tech or smartphones, offering a more immersive experience on long-distance tours. With speculation of even more advanced rider aids on the horizon, the 2025 R 1300 RT promises to push boundaries in both performance and safety.

Pricing Expectations and Timeline

Final specs and pricing for the 2025 R 1300 RT have not yet been officially released, but are expected to be announced in November. Given the anticipated upgrades—such as the larger engine and new technology—it’s reasonable to expect a price increase compared to the current R 1250 RT, which starts around $20,000. The 2025 model could fall in the range of $22,000 to $25,000, particularly for premium variants with all the extras.

Dealers are already anticipating the arrival of consumer models in mid-winter 2025, with police models expected to follow in April. These timelines are based on industry patterns and dealer expectations, but we should have a clearer picture as we get closer to the official announcement.
