KTM has announced a worldwide recall of its PowerParts steering damper, part number 16181T01E, to address a potential issue with the component’s screw connection. The recall, announced October 15, 2026, calls for a preventive update intended to improve long-term reliability and durability.
The affected steering damper is compatible with the following motorcycles:
- KTM 1290 Super Duke R: 2020–2023
- KTM 1290 Super Duke R EVO: 2022–2023
- KTM 1390 Super Duke R: 2024–2026
- KTM 1390 Super Duke R EVO: 2024–2026
According to KTM, the steering damper’s screw connection has been further optimized to help prevent potential problems. The corrective procedure involves applying threadlocker to the screw connection using an improved assembly specification.
Why the Steering Damper Matters
A steering damper helps stabilize a motorcycle by reducing sudden or unwanted movements of the handlebars, particularly during hard acceleration, over uneven pavement, or at higher speeds. It provides additional resistance to rapid steering movements that might otherwise develop into a potentially dangerous wobble. A loose or improperly secured steering damper could compromise its effectiveness, making KTM’s preventive update an important safety precaution.
