CHIGEE Launches SR-1 Motorcycle Radar System
American Sport Touring is watching motorcycle electronics company CHIGEE with interest. The company’s products are innovative and appear to offer real benefits for riders, particularly as motorcycle electronics continue to evolve toward enhanced safety, situational awareness, navigation, and integrated display systems. Before endorsing this product, however, we would like to see more rider feedback — and ideally conduct our own hands-on test — regarding quality, durability, and integration with a variety of motorcycles.
CHIGEE’s latest product, the SR-1 Millimeter-Wave Radar System, is aimed directly at that rider-awareness category. Announced June 3, the SR-1 is a motorcycle-specific radar system designed to add blind spot detection, lane change assistance, overtaking alerts, and rear collision warnings to a broad range of motorcycles.
The system uses an automotive-grade 77GHz radar sensor and is designed to monitor areas behind and beside the motorcycle. According to CHIGEE, the SR-1 runs four independent warning algorithms: Blind Spot Detection, Lane Change Assist, Active Overtaking Alert, and Rear Collision Warning. Sensitivity is adjustable.
CHIGEE says the 77GHz radar system uses a 2Tx/4Rx antenna with a 110-degree rear field of view and detection range of up to 70 meters. The company also says the system is designed to work in rain, fog, dust, and darkness while filtering interference from signs and other roadside signals.
The SR-1 also includes a rear-facing warning function. A high-brightness light built into the radar module flashes automatically when a vehicle approaches quickly from behind, intended to alert the approaching driver as well as the rider.
Installation is described as a tail-mounted radar module, mirror-mounted warning indicators, and a single harness tied into the motorcycle’s 12V electrical system. The included indicators provide warnings without requiring a separate display. Riders using CHIGEE AIO-5 or AIO-6 displays can add on-screen radar data and audible alerts. CHIGEE also offers an optional CG BSD Radar Mirror Kit that integrates the warning indicators into the mirrors.
The CHIGEE SR-1 is now on sale through the company’s website, with pricing listed at $219. M ore information is available on the CHIGEE SR-1 product page.
As with any rider-assistance technology, the SR-1 does not replace mirror checks, head checks, lane-position awareness, or ordinary rider judgment. CHIGEE also notes that the system cannot eliminate all risk.
CHIGEE is not alone in bringing radar-based awareness systems to motorcycling. Garmin has also entered the category with its zūmo R1 Radar, which is designed to provide rear-approach and blind spot alerts for riders. We covered that product here: Garmin zūmo R1 Radar for Motorcycles: First Look.
For sport touring riders, the SR-1 is notable because blind spot awareness and rear-traffic monitoring can be especially useful during long days, multi-lane highway transitions, and heavily loaded travel. Whether the SR-1 delivers that benefit cleanly across different motorcycles, riding environments, and cockpit setups is the question we hope to answer with a hands-on review soon.
